reported<\/a>:<\/p>\nFormer President Donald Trump is suing journalist Bob Woodward for releasing recordings of interviews that he gave to the journalist in 2019 and 2020, claiming he never agreed to those tapes being shared with the public.<\/p>\n
In a lawsuit filed Monday against Woodward, Simon & Schuster Inc., and the publisher\u2019s parent company Paramount Global, Trump claimed that although he had given Woodward consent to record their conversations \u201cfor the sole purpose of a book,\u201d that didn\u2019t extend to packaging those recordings as an audiobook. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis case centers on Mr. Woodward\u2019s systematic usurpation, manipulation, and exploitation of audio of President Trump,\u201d Trump\u2019s lawyers wrote.<\/p>\n
The complaint alleges violations of Trump\u2019s copyright interests and accuses Woodward and the publisher of unjustly profiting from the tapes. Trump is seeking just under $50 million in damages, a figure his lawyers calculated assuming Woodward would sell two million copies of the audiobook at a download price of $24.99.<\/p>\n
Trump participated in 19 interviews in-person or by phone with Woodward between December 2019 and August 2020, as well as in 2016 when he was still a candidate, according to the complaint. Woodward\u2019s book, Rage, was published a month after the last interview. In October 2022, Simon & Schuster released the audiobook of the recordings, The Trump Tapes. <\/p>\n
Recall, CNN went ballistic last October because Trump supposedly gave Bob Woodward \u2018classified information\u2019 \u2013 of course Woodward was never able to verify the so-called classified information.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have built a weapons system that nobody has ever had in this country before,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe have stuff that you haven\u2019t even seen or heard about.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump continued, \u201cWe have stuff that Putin and Xi have never heard about before. Getting along with Russia is a good thing, it\u2019s not a bad thing, alright? Especially because they have 1,332 nuclear fucking warheads.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s funny, the relationships I have, the tougher and meaner they are, the better I get along with them. You know? Explain that to me someday, okay. But maybe it\u2019s not a bad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
CNN melted down over Trump\u2019s statement to Woodward then admitted the reporter was never able to verify the information.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo just to clarify, Woodward was never able to verify whether this system exists,\u201d CNN\u2019s Jamie Gangel said.<\/p>\n
