{"id":11914,"date":"2023-04-11T18:47:56","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T18:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sasquatchnewsonline.com\/?p=11914"},"modified":"2023-04-11T18:47:56","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T18:47:56","slug":"newsom-seeks-to-punish-oc-city-of-huntington-beach-for-refusing-to-allow-multi-unit-properties-to-be-built-on-single-family-residence-parcels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sasquatchnewsonline.com\/?p=11914","title":{"rendered":"Newsom Seeks to Punish OC City of Huntington Beach for Refusing to Allow Multi-Unit Properties to be Built on Single-Family Residence Parcels"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>California Governor Gavin Newsom is seeking to punish the city of Huntington Beach for refusing to adhere to the state\u2019s housing laws.<\/p>\n<p>Huntington Beach, dubbed \u2018Surf City USA,\u2019 is a city on the Southern California coastline in Orange County, a traditionally conservative enclave that boasts multi-million dollar beach front properties.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Newsom signed SB 9, dubbed the \u201cduplex bill\u201d which allows multi-unit properties to be built on lots zoned for a single-family residence. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people of Huntington Beach don\u2019t want to urbanize our city and have the problems of Gavin Newsom\u2019s San Francisco. If our residents wanted that, they would move to Los Angeles or San Francisco. The Huntington Beach residents want us to fight against these ridiculous and arbitrary mandate housing numbers from Sacramento,\u201d Huntington Beach Mayor Tony Strickland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huntingtonbeachca.gov\/announcements\/announcement.cfm?id=1746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said <\/a>earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom is using the might of the state government to force Huntington Beach to allow 4-unit rental properties to be built on Single Family Residence parcels.<\/p>\n<p>Of course this law is designed to devalue the single-family homes near the coast, but that\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month the Huntington Beach City Council refused to adopt SB 9.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom and other state officials on Monday sought a court order to force the city of Huntington Beach to adhere to California\u2019s \u2018Housing Element Law.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuntington Beach continues to fail its residents,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/3943972-newsom-seeks-to-punish-california-city-for-refusing-to-adhere-to-housing-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said <\/a>Governor Newsom. \u201cEvery city and county needs to do their part to bring down the high housing and rent costs that are impacting families across this state. California will continue taking every step necessary to ensure everyone is building their fair share of housing and not flouting state housing laws at the expense of the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia is in the midst of a housing crisis, and time and time again, Huntington Beach has demonstrated they are part of the problem by defiantly refusing every opportunity to provide essential housing for its own residents,\u201d said California Attorney General Bonta. \u201cThe City\u2019s refusal last week to adopt a housing element in accordance with state law is just the latest in a string of willfully illegal actions by the city \u2013 decisions that worsen our housing crisis and harm taxpayers and Huntington Beach residents. We won\u2019t stand idly by as Huntington Beach continues to flagrantly violate state housing laws designed to bring crucial affordable housing opportunities to our communities.
