{"id":11975,"date":"2023-04-14T03:46:12","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T03:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sasquatchnewsonline.com\/?p=11975"},"modified":"2023-04-14T03:46:12","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T03:46:12","slug":"florida-house-passes-bill-enacting-death-penalty-for-child-rape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sasquatchnewsonline.com\/?p=11975","title":{"rendered":"Florida House Passes Bill Enacting Death Penalty For Child Rape"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Florida lawmakers approved two bills this week that would allow for the execution of child rapists.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida House passed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2023\/1297\/?Tab=RelatedBills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HB1297, <\/a>a bill that allows for the death penalty for rapists of children under the age of 12 without jury unanimity, by a 95-14 vote on late Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed measure, sponsored by Rep. Jessica Baker, R \u2013 Fl.,\u00a0 would require the vote of only 8 jurors out of 12 in order to approve capital punishment for people who commit sexual battery on children.<\/p>\n<p>If fewer than eight jurors recommend the death penalty, defendants would be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate is slated to vote on its version of the bill, SB 1342, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation would change the precedent that requires unanimous verdicts for executions and would make Florida the fourth state to not require jury unanimity.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida House passes a bill enacting death penalty for child rape <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/spZxEEScOu\">pic.twitter.com\/spZxEEScOu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Citizen Free Press (@CitizenFreePres) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CitizenFreePres\/status\/1646664993927200768?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>The proposed measures follow longstanding US Supreme Court and Florida Supreme Court rulings that outlaw the execution of defendants in rape cases, including a 2008 US Supreme Court decision in a Louisana case.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Baker said she hopes the bill will provoke the US Supreme Court to reconsider its stance on the issue and permit the execution of defendants found guilty of child rape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rape of a child is a deliberate, methodical act,\u201d she said. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t happen accidentally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Lauren Book, a survivor of child sexual assault, detailed her struggle with the trauma she endured decades ago during a passionate speech during Thursday\u2019s committee hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no statute of limitations that a victim suffers. This is a life sentence that is handed down to young children,\u201d Book said. \u201cWe\u2019re talking about the youngest of the young in this bill. I was one of those kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"scripps_iframe_embed\">\n<div><\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The measure is headed now headed to the full Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Florida will have the lowest death penalty threshold in the nation upon Gov.
