\u201cAustralia\u2019s controversial move to become the world\u2019s first country to allow the clinical prescription of MDMA, better known as part of the drug\u00a0<\/em>ecstasy, and psilocybin \u2013 the main ingredient in \u2018magic\u2019 mushrooms \u2013 for a raft of psychiatric conditions has left many clinicians and researchers concerned.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The therapy would provide an options for people with mental illnesses\u00a0 not responding to other treatments. Some hail it as a \u2018game changer\u2019, but others fear that the was decision rushed.<\/p>\n

\u201c3,4-Methyl<\/em>\u200b<\/em>enedioxy<\/em>\u200b-<\/em>methamphetamine, commonly known as ecstasy, and psilocybin are both\u00a0Schedule 9\u00a0(prohibited substances) in Australia.\u00a0The drugs in question are still being tested in clinical trials.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The decision to approve their being prescribed for the treatments in question is very \u2018early\u2019 as compared with the \u2018usual process of developing and rolling out new treatments\u2019, clinical psychiatrist Dr. Colleen Loo, a professor of psychiatry at the University of New South Wales [\u2026] in Sydney told the media.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

There is also no data on the long-term results of the treatments, or about how permanent are the \u2018promising positive effects\u2019.<\/p>\n

Professor Richard Bryant, School of Psychology, University of NSW: \u201cThe science is at a point where we can say it is too early to be prescribing MDMA for PTSD patients. Instead, we should be investing in research to understand how MDMA can be used in relation to proven treatments.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

The cost of psychedelic-assisted therapy is estimated to be around\u00a0$25,000.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new regulations allows \u2018approved psychiatrists\u2019 to prescribe MDMA for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psilocybin for severe depression.<\/p>\n

BBC<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n

\u201cAustralia\u2019s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) shocked many in the medical and science world in February when it reclassified MDMA and psilocybin so they could be used for therapeutic purposes.<\/em><\/p>\n

It declared the drugs \u2018relatively safe\u2019 when used in a \u2018medically-controlled environment\u2019 for patients \u2018with serious mental health conditions\u2019. Otherwise, both MDMA and psilocybin are illegal in Australia.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Professor Susan Rossell, cognitive neuropsychologist at Melbourne\u2019s Swinburne University: \u201cWhen you look at interventions\u2026 for any other kind of disease, whether it\u2019s cardiovascular disease or cancer, you cannot get a drug to market as quickly as this has been done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Australia is the first country to regulate the use of these drugs as medications, but clinical trials are ongoing in the US, Canada and Israel.<\/p>\n
