For decades, from his small town in Center-west Brazilian state of Goi\u00e1s, Jo\u00e3o Teixeira de Faria built a worldwide reputation as a medium and faith healer.<\/p>\n
Both the common people and celebrities flocked to his house on the outskirts of the Federal District of Bras\u00edlia, in search of his \u2018healing touch\u2019 and his highly controversial psychic surgeries.<\/p>\n
O Globo<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n \u201cJo\u00e3o Teixeira de Faria, \u2018Jo\u00e3o de Deus\u2019, gained a following of faithful foreigners \u2013 who call him \u2018John of God\u2019 \u2013 when he appeared on a program by American presenter Oprah Winfrey, in 2012. Among his international fans, figures like former US president Bill Clinton, actress Shirley MacLaine and model Naomi Campbell.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n But it all came crashing down in 2018, when a scandal of gigantic proportions broke, revealing that the medium had raped or abused hundreds of women and girls that sought his \u2018spiritual help\u2019.<\/p>\n Conex\u00e3o Pol\u00edtica<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n \u201c<\/em>This Monday, the 10th, the medium, better known as Jo\u00e3o de Deus, was sentenced to an additional sentence of 99 years in prison for sexual crimes.<\/em><\/p>\n The Justice considered that the medium committed \u2018rape of vulnerable person\u2019 and \u2018sexual violation through fraud\u2019 against eight victims between the years 2010 and 2018. In addition to the prison sentence, Jo\u00e3o de Deus was also condemned to pay R$ 100 thousand in compensation for moral damages to the victims.<\/em><\/p>\n Despite the new convictions establishing the fulfillment of the sentence in a closed regime, Jo\u00e3o de Deus is currently under house arrest due to a second instance decision. Since his arrest at the end of 2018, he has alternated between a closed regime and house arrest. The defense of Jo\u00e3o de Deus alleged that he suffers from a series of illnesses to obtain this benefit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n sentence was 99 years, 8 months and 15 days of imprisonment in a closed regime.<\/p>\n four lawsuits in progress in the Abadi\u00e2nia district, in which he is a defendant. These lawsuits are already in the final arguments phase.<\/p>\n Metropoles<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n \u201cWith the new convictions, the medium\u2019s sentences adds up to 370 years, 9 months and 15 days in prison. The sentences await judgment of appeals. Now, there remains four criminal prosecutions against Jo\u00e3o de Deus awaiting sentencing. According to the Court of Justice of Goi\u00e1s, all cases are in the final arguments phase.\u201d<\/p>\n All cases are still possible to be appealled. According to court records, Jo\u00e3o de Deus committed abuses against at least 42 victims between 1985 and 2018.<\/p>\n Incredible as it may seem, this torrent of accusations of sex crimes against people who put their misguided trust on him was NOT the worst accusations against the \u2018healer\u2019.<\/p>\n While these allegations have been erased from all recent coverage of the story, I\u2019m here to remind you that an activist blew the whistle on the fact that \u2018John of God\u2019 allegedly \u2018ran a baby trafficking operation where children were then sold to childless couples\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Daily Mail<\/a> broke the story back in 2019:<\/p>\n \u201cActivist Sabrina Bittencourt \u2013 whose investigations lead to his arrest \u2013 claims the celebrity medium ran a baby trafficking operation where children were \u2018farmed\u2019 in Brazil before being sold to childless couples around the world.<\/em><\/p>\n She alleges that young girls were held captive in remote farms where they were forced to produce babies \u2013 before being murdered after ten years of giving birth.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Bittencourt spoke to women from three continents who claimed they bought Brazilian babies from John of God.<\/p>\n \u201cThese girls were murdered after 10 years of giving birth. We have got a number of testimonies.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n She added: \u2018We have received reports from the adoptive mothers of their children that we sold for between $20,000 and $50,000 in Europe, USA and Australia, as well as testimony from ex-workers and local people who are tired of being complicit with John of God\u2019s gang\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n But in a shocking \u2013 but hardly unexpected \u2013 turn of events, Sabrina Bittencourt was found to have \u2018committed suicide\u2019 while living in Spain under protection from death threats she was receiving.<\/p>\n The Sun<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n \u201cSex abuse support group Victimas Unidas, which worked with Sabrina Bittencourt, said she had left a note explaining why she killed herself.<\/em><\/p>\n [\u2026] Eldest son Gabriel Baum confirmed her death, writing on Facebook: \u201cShe took the last step so that we could live.
