J6er James Beeks looks forward to life after his full acquittal<\/p>\n
After becoming just the second January 6th<\/span> defendant acquitted of all charges, he has good reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI woke up the day after trial, and it was just a whole new sense of purpose in life, and it\u2019s hard to explain,\u201d Beeks explains at the beginning of a Saturday afternoon<\/span> phone call.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n D.C. Judge Amit P. Mehta last Wednesday ruled that there was insufficient evidence to convict Beeks of knowingly working with OathKeepers to obstruct congressional proceedings on January 6th.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Beeks was originally indicted on numerous felony counts but was eventually presented with the option of a stipulated trial by the United States Attorney\u2019s Office \u2014 an offer the former Broadway actor was eager to accept.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI got the offer from the government because I wasn\u2019t taking the plea deal, and I wanted the truth to come out,\u201d Beeks explains, \u201cSo the way they offered it to me, I said, \u2018Okay, let me hear what\u2019s going on and what they have to say, because I know that I\u2019m innocent and I\u2019m not going to go down for this.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n District of Columbia Judge Amit P. Mehta<\/p>\n Beeks, who represented himself at trial, says prosecutors offered to charge him with Conspiracy to commit the infamous \u201c18 USC 1512 Obstruction of an Official Proceeding\u201d charge, as well as an additional charge \u201cConspiracy to Prevent and Officer from Discharging Official Duties\u201d \u2014 stipulating as part of the DoJ agreement that the remaining seven charges on which he and co-defendant, Donovan Crowl, were originally indicted would be dropped.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Beeks believes the government made the offer, knowing the weakness of their case against him \u2014 one last shot for prosecutors to win another conviction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n But prior to January 6th<\/span>, Beeks says he was living his dream job with the role of Judas Iscariot in the 50th Anniversary production of \u201cJesus Christ Superstar\u201d.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI started Broadway when I was in my twenties, and I was egotistical,\u201d Beeks explains, saying he was \u201cyoung and cocky\u201d and didn\u2019t have enough successes in life to appreciate the things he had.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhen I booked Jesus Christ Superstar, I was the first to be cast in the show, and I knew it. It was the right time. You know, kismets,\u201d Beeks says with a laugh. Beeks performs in \u201cJesus Christ Superstar\u201d<\/p>\n On December 9th<\/span> of 2019, Beeks says the show opened and started touring to great reviews \u2014 but then the lockdowns happened, and the young actor was forced to sit safely at home while the \u201cCovid drama\u201d unfolded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI was looked back in retrospect and think, I\u2019m glad \u2014 grateful for what I was given,\u201d Beeks says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n While he watched the riots of summer 2020, Beeks was distressed by the lives lost to violence \u2014 one, in particular, being retired police officer\u00a0David Dorn<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who was murdered in St. Louis, Missouri, on June 2, 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In the midst of protests, centered on a question about the value of Black Lives, Beeks openly wondered whether Dorn\u2019s life mattered.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI respected the police, and I respected law enforcement,\u201d Beeks says, \u201cSeeing that and other images of people being persecuted for what they believe \u2014 their ideologies or their speech, I thought if I got a chance to help to be a peacekeeper in situations like that, I would hop at the chance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n \u201cSo President Trump asked, or, you know, invited people to come up to DC, I thought it would be a good chance to do that, to be a peacekeeper,\u201d Beeks says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It was around that time that Beeks planned to attend the D.C. \u201cWild Protest\u201d with Samuel Armes, a Florida Cryptocurrency entrepreneur who admittedly crafted large portions of the \u201c1776 Returns\u201d document<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0which was used as shaky evidence of conspiracy against Proud Boys during their eight-month trial for Seditious Conspiracy<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cI met (Armes) at a \u2018Stop the Steal\u201d rally in Orlando,\u201d Beeks explains, \u201cAnd my purpose at that rally was the same. I was there to be security, just in case things went south, you know, violently.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Beeks says Armes approached him, complimented his singing of the national anthem, and the two men exchanged phone numbers\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe stayed in contact through texts and Snapchat and all that kinda stuff, and then it became like a flirtatious kind of thing,\u201d Beeks explains, \u201cAnd he was more into sending videos and stuff like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Beeks says Armes twisted the nature of their relationship in his testimony to the January 6th<\/span> Select Committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s an issue,\u201d Beeks explains while briefly hesitating, \u201cWe became close and I asked him, and he said he was gonna go to January 6th<\/span>, and I think I put him on the hotel reservation, I\u2019m not sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Beeks says Armes explained to the J6 Committee his decision to back out on the trip at the last minute.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI actually asked him about the Proud Boys and he kind of mentioned he had a friend in the Proud Boys, so I didn\u2019t wanna go along,\u201d Beeks says, \u201cBecause were in the news at that time with, you know, Antifa and those things. So, you know, it was just a bad look to be associated with anything like that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Samuel Armes<\/p>\n Although he expresses awareness of a certain reputation and no desire to be affiliated with Proud Boys at the time, Beeks says he \u201cdidn\u2019t know anything about Oath Keepers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Not wanting to go to D.C. alone, Beeks says he made the decision to join the Oath Keepers.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cIt wasn\u2019t like I had time to get to know anybody or anything like that,\u201d explains Beeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI just did some research \u2014 clearly not enough,\u201d Beeks says with a laugh, \u201cLike I said, we were living our lives, and I wasn\u2019t like actively on there every day. I just signed up to meet people, you know, some ex-police officers, ex-military. That sounds great. Right. It sounds like a great idea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMy life is like Forrest Gump,\u201d adds Beeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Although Judge Mehta recognized Beeks\u2019s innocence on January 6th<\/span>, his co-defendant, Donovan Crowl, was convicted on all charges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Beeks says it was social media statements and an association with Jessica Watkins that led to the conviction of Crowl.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s some things that they use through conversations, through texts, and also things after (January 6<\/span>), like a meme they sent out and other things like saying proudly that he took over the Capitol,\u201d Beeks explains, \u201cAnd in my case, there was none of that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Former U.S. Marine and now convicted J6er Donovan Crowl<\/p>\n Beeks says his own innocence was solidified through the testimony of Tina Myers, who he took pictures with and was asked about his purpose for being at the Capitol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Beeks, at the time, stated his self-proclaimed intention \u2014 \u201cto protect everyone from violence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Paired with video evidence of Beeks \u201cmissing the huddle,\u201d where a plan was allegedly concocted among Oath Keepers, Myers\u2019 testimony sealed the deal for an affirmative defense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cGreg Hunter, the standby counsel, said, \u2018If you know how he\u2019s a football player and it\u2019s like if I miss the huddle in a play, I\u2019m screwed,\u2019\u201d Beeks explains with a laugh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n As for his feelings on the conviction of Crowl, Beeks says questions remain about the criminalization of political, \u201chyperbolic speech\u201d and whether or not it\u2019s protected by the First Amendment.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cApparently, in these courts, it\u2019s not,\u201d says Beeks. When it comes to public accusations that his acquittal was influenced by his race, Beeks says that\u2019s the problem from both sides of the political divide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m an American,\u201d Beeks explains, \u201cThe Judge is an American. White people are American, Hispanic people are American, and we\u2019re all Americans. And I don\u2019t see color as an incentive to win this thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHowever,\u201d Beeks says, \u201cLogic and truth will prevail.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n As for any insinuation that he received a sweetheart deal in exchange for previous or current cooperation with the federal government, Beeks says, \u201cThat\u2019s patently false.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n When asked if he feels there was any federal involvement on January 6th<\/span>, Beeks says he views it as a red herring or a false flag. \u201cWhat\u2019s sad to me is that Americans are pitted against Americans and want to see these people (J6 Defendants) persecuted,\u201d Beeks explains, \u201cIt\u2019s the same thing that happened in Germany in the 1930s, and I hope people can see that \u2014 even the ones who are, um, rooting for this, this, this narrative.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI stand firmly against it,\u201d adds Beeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Now exonerated, Beeks says he plans to move forward with his life and return to school for computer science.
