Kevin Spacey\u2019s high-profile trial for sexual assault, taking place in London, England, is drawing to its conclusion.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, prosecutor Christine Agnew presented the final allegations to the jury.<\/p>\n
Agnew reminded the jury that \u2018four men, unknown to each other\u2019 made allegations the same man, but that this was not simply a \u2018strength in numbers\u2019 case.<\/p>\n
Variety<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n \u201c\u2019Four separate men who told friends and relations what happened to them, then told police, then came to court to tell their accounts\u2019, she said. \u2018Are they all motivated by \u2018money money money\u2019 as you were dramatically told by the defendant when he gave his evidence? Or have they just had enough and are no longer prepared to be the \u2019secret keeper\u2019 for someone who treated them so badly\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n It\u2019s far from easy to level allegations at another person, and specially so if it\u2019s a celebrity, she said, adding that the charges violated the victims\u2019 \u2018bodily autonomy\u2019.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd just because the complainants are men doesn\u2019t mean they should have to put up with unwanted touching any more than women should, she said emphatically. \u2018Society possibly in 2023 is more sympathetic to women than it is to men in these circumstances\u2019, said Agnew. \u2018But why should these men put up with what happened?\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The prosecutor showed outrage that one of the alleged victims was asked, during cross-examination, whether he had been \u2018flattered\u2019 by the actor\u2019s advances. A woman would never be asked that, she pointed out.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen someone says \u2018no\u2019 they mean no,\u201d said Agnew. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what they\u2019re wearing or how they react to unwanted advances. They\u2019re still unwanted.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n She admitted being \u2018star struck\u2019 cross-examining Elton John, who appeared as a witness for the defense. She urged the jury to disregard the men\u2019s evidence, questioning what they had actually \u2018brought to the case\u2019.<\/p>\n \u201c\u2019Don\u2019t be side tracked by the glitter and fame\u2019, Agnew warned. \u2018Sir Elton said himself, if it was the Queen [in front of him] he probably wouldn\u2019t have seen her because he had his head down\u201d when heading to his car after exiting a venue\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n She tried to get the jury to disregard their eventual feelings towards the artist Kevin Spacey, and focus on the actions of the man.<\/p>\n Yahoo<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n \u201cIn a closing speech on Wednesday, prosecutor Christine Agnew KC said the case involves an \u2018enormous power imbalance\u2019 and a man who is \u2018used to getting his own way\u2019 taking advantage of that.<\/em><\/p>\n [\u2026] Ms Agnew said his alleged offending had left the men feeling \u201cdiminished\u201d and \u2018worthless\u2019, adding: \u2018There is no doubt that he is a very famous and lauded actor\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Also on Wednesday, some good news for the Spacey defense, as some of the charges were dismissed by the judge.<\/p>\n \u201cOn Wednesday, the four indecent assault charges on the indictment against Kevin Spacey, which were alternative counts, were struck off by the judge, due to a \u2018legal technicality\u2019 and not as a result of the prosecution abandoning any allegation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n On Thursday, defense attorney Patrick Gibbs told jurors that there were \u2018three liars\u2019 in this case.<\/p>\n Daily Mail<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n \u201c\u2018The reason they are lying can possibly only be known to them. The problem with [the fourth complainant\u2019s] evidence is not that he\u2019s a liar, but that he was not exactly sober as he describes \u2013 but nor was anyone.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Gibbs called the jurors\u2019 attention to the corroborating witnesses\u2019 account, saying they are not \u2018independent\u2019 but come from the mouth of the complainant himself.<\/p>\n He reminded jurors that the men came forward to the police after 20 years had passed. He said that none of the dates from the allegations were disproven, and that prosecution now says that \u2018dates don\u2019t matter\u2019.<\/p>\n About the accuser that the defense is not alleging to be lying, Gibbs added: \u201cI\u2019m not suggesting that [the man] is gay, but I am suggesting he wouldn\u2019t be the first person to be met with a charismatic, persuasive admirer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n He may have been ashamed and confused by it, the defense attorney said.<\/p>\n \u201cPerhaps, I don\u2019t know, I\u2019m not a psychiatrist, he later needed to re-describe what happened not only to his brother, but to himself, because that explained a confusing episode in an otherwise conventional life. [\u2026] He had the perfect opportunity to rewrite history in those simple terms: \u2018I was abused by Kevin Spacey just like the other three people I see the CPS have identified\u2019.
