New York\u2019s Governor, Kathy Hochul, has enacted full-scale social media monitoring in her state, looking at the actions of users, and monitoring American citizens like \u201cbig brother\u201d in a proposed attempt to curb gun violence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a speech on Monday,\u00a0<\/span>Hochul\u00a0<\/span><\/a>informed the crowd that her intentions were in motion to utilize big tech social media firms to monitor private citizens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, Hochul unveiled what she called a \u201ccomprehensive plan to combat domestic terrorism and prevent gun violence\u201d, in the wake of a mass shooting at a Buffalo grocery store.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe as a country are facing an intersection of two crises: the mainstreaming of hate speech \u2013 including white nationalism, racism, and white supremacy \u2013 and the easy access to military-style weapons and magazines,\u201d Hochul said, announcing measures to create new domestic terrorism and intelligence units to increase social media monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n

The package of measures came as New York state authorities launched an\u00a0<\/span>investigation into social media platforms<\/span><\/a>\u00a0they believe the accused Buffalo grocery store gunman used to plan, promote and broadcast the attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

On May 18, Hochul signed an\u00a0<\/span>Executive Order<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to Establish a New Domestic Terrorism Unit within the Office of Counter-Terrorism. The new unit will focus on \u201cDeradicalization and Threat Assessment Management; Establishes State Police Unit Devoted to Tracking and Responding to Extremist Violent Threats on Social Media.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
