{"id":20540,"date":"2023-11-10T18:39:49","date_gmt":"2023-11-10T18:39:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sasquatchnewsonline.com\/?p=20540"},"modified":"2023-11-10T18:39:49","modified_gmt":"2023-11-10T18:39:49","slug":"the-san-jose-galleon-the-biggest-sunken-treasure-in-history-hasnt-been-salvaged-yet-but-its-already-causing-dispute-in-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sasquatchnewsonline.com\/?p=20540","title":{"rendered":"The San Jose Galleon, the \u2018Biggest Sunken Treasure in History\u2019, Hasn\u2019t Been Salvaged Yet \u2013 But It\u2019s Already Causing Dispute in Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A sunken treasure worth tens of billions sure sounds like a dream.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, that is now a reality about to be salvaged from the bottom of the Caribbean sea \u2013 but that is already causing waves in dry land, where an American company is suing the Colombian government.<\/p>\n<p>The sunken Spanish warship that lay undiscovered at the bottom of the ocean for centuries is spurring a modern-day legal battle over who has the rights to its antique treasures.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/colombia-battle-over-rights-300-year-old-spanish-warship-treasure-2023-11\">Business Insider<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0San Jos\u00e9 galleon, which sank off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia, in 1708, contained \u2018the biggest treasure in the history of humanity\u2019, an October legal filing from the government of Colombia said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 300 years after the San Jos\u00e9 went down in flames, a US salvage company is suing the Colombian government for \u2018half the ship\u2019s treasures\u2019, claiming that it discovered the wreck first, back in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the San Jos\u00e9 sank in a battle against the British in 1708, the ship was carrying what is believed to be the most expensive cargo ever shipped from the New World, including more than 7 million pesos, 116 steel chests full of emeralds, and 30 million gold coins,\u00a0according to court documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The US salvage company Sea Search Armada claims to have found debris from the San Jos\u00e9 wreck first, and handed over the coordinates of the discovered debris to the Colombian government.<\/p>\n<p>Picture of the debris filed of the San Jose, filled with treasures worth billions.<\/p>\n<p>Search Armada also claims that it had an agreement to receive \u2018half the ship\u2019s treasure\u2019, according to the company\u2019s December 2022 notice of arbitration.<\/p>\n<p>The Colombian government disputed the company \u2018s claims, saying that the ship wasn\u2019t even at the coordinates handed over by the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018How can it be explained that a private company finds the biggest treasure in the history of humanity and fails to report it?\u2019 attorneys for the government wrote in the October response. \u2018The answer is simple: because it did not find it\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colombia claims to have found it only in \u00a02015, but the coordinates have never been made public, and deemed a state secret.<\/p>\n<p>The south-American country now argues that the\u00a0ship and its treasures\u00a0are a national heritage item that will be kept in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Sea Search Armada, for its part, alleges that the Colombian navy simply discovered parts of the same debris field it first found in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe company is suing for $10 billion \u2014 which it says is equivalent to half the value of the ship\u2019s treasures \u2014 under the US-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photos and videos of the ship debris show fine china, coins, and cannons littered across the ocean floor where the San Jos\u00e9 sank.<\/p>\n<p>The mission to recover the old sunken ship has now been launched by the Colombian government.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/05\/news\/20-billion-san-jose-shipwreck-to-be-exhumed-in-battle-over-sunken-treasure\/\">New York Post<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em>Colombian President Gustavo Petro ordered his administration to exhume the \u2018Holy Grail of shipwrecks\u2019 \u2014 the Spanish galleon San Jos\u00e9 \u2014 from the floor of the Caribbean Sea as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Petro wants to bring ship to the surface before his term is up in 2026.
