You have to be from the \u2018globalist-liberal left\u2019 \u2013 or else you\u2019re painted as bad as conservatives are depicted.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Take the case of Slovakian leftwing populist Robert Fico. The new Prime Minister had barely been in office for a few weeks and he already has a very bad news cycle going against him.<\/p>\n

Slovakian journalists and international watchdogs have now \u2018expressed alarm\u2019 after Fico described leading media outlets as \u2018hostile\u2019 and threatened to restrict their access.<\/p>\n

Fico returned to power as Slovakia\u2019s leader in October, in a coalition government led by his populist Smer party.<\/p>\n

This week he made it known that some of the Slovakia\u2019s biggest outlets were not welcome in his office.<\/p>\n

The Guardian<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019I announced actions against enemy\u2019s media \u2013 TV Mark\u00edza, <\/em>Denn\u00edk N, SME and the portal Aktuality\u2019, he said, claiming that they \u2018openly declare hatred and hostility against Smer and spread these trends with joy\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018I decided that we will check their permission to enter and work in the government office\u2019, the prime minister said, adding that \u2018until the decision is made, they will be unwelcome guests at the government office\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Fico has had two premierships: 2006-2010 and 2012-2018.<\/p>\n

He resigned after the murder of J\u00e1n Kuciak, an investigative reporter at Aktuality, and his fiancee, Martina Ku\u0161n\u00edrov\u00e1.<\/p>\n

The killings sparked a political crisis and put a spotlight on press freedom in the region.<\/p>\n

Now, his comments have sparked concerns in Bratislava and abroad that Slovakia\u2019s press freedoms are under attack<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Fico is waging a personal war with journalists and abusing the state for it\u2019, said Peter B\u00e1rdy, the editor-in-chief of Aktuality. While noting that it was still unclear whether Fico would actually ban media outlets from attending press conferences, B\u00e1rdy said on Wednesday: \u2018If this happens, it will not allow us to confront them with the practical aspects of the politics they are doing\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

He added: \u2018But what\u2019s worse is that this is how they continue their disinformation campaign against select media, feeding the public the idea that they can\u2019t trust us because we\u2019re lying and hostile\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Beata Balogov\u00e1, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper SME:<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the European Union is serious about defending its own values, it should be more than concerned about the state of press freedom in Slovakia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe country\u2019s progressive president, Zuzana \u010caputov\u00e1, defended press freedom. \u2018The media is part of the <\/em>bloodstream of democracy\u2019, she wrote on social media. \u2018I refuse and cannot support the division of parts of society into more or less noble, friendly or hostile\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
