Focus Features has released a new trailer for an upcoming \u201ccomedy\u201d called \u201cThe American Society of Magical Negroes,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>directed by Kobi Libii.<\/p>\n

The trailer features a scene where white people are described as \u201cthe most dangerous animal on the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s website shares,<\/a> \u201cThe American Society of Magical Negroes<\/em> is \u201ca fresh, satirical comedy about a young man, Aren, who is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people\u2019s lives easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

The trailer introduces us to Smith\u2019s character, who appears to be a new recruit of the American Society of Magical Negroes being trained by Grier\u2019s character.<\/p>\n

The specific line of dialogue labelling white people as \u2018dangerous animals\u2019 is uttered by Grier halfway through the trailer, as his character prepares to explain what the mission of this magical society is, revealing that their main goal is to keep white people happy \u2014 with their discomfort levels being measured in \u201cwhite tears.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the most dangerous animal on the planet?\u201d he rhetorically asks. Right after Smith\u2019s character replies with \u201cshark,\u201d he is immediately corrected by Grier, who says, \u201cWhite people when they feel uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhite people feeling uncomfortable precedes a lot of bad stuff for us,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat\u2019s why we fight white discomfort every day. Because the happier they are, the safer we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with Black Entertainment Television, <\/a>Libii shares,<\/p>\n

\u201cIt all sort of starts with the Magical Negro trope,\u201d the director prefaced. \u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019re familiar with it, but just to define it on my own terms, I think of the Magical Negro as a kind of stock Black character; a Black best friend character who is only focused on helping the white hero.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on, \u201cThey don\u2019t really have an inner life, and they don\u2019t have their own things going on. They\u2019re just relentlessly focused on helping this white character grow in most cases, and I always thought that was so funny. For whatever reason, the idea that there\u2019s a white writer who pictures the thing we do in the morning is getting up and trying to help them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI found it so absurd and incorrect and funny that I wanted to blow it out and criticize it, but also use it as a way to talk about other stuff,\u201d Libii further explained. \u201cWhat it\u2019s like to grow up as a Black person in this culture and some of the wild and fantastical things we have to do to survive. To me, that\u2019s the origin story of the film.\u201d<\/p>\n
