{"id":22475,"date":"2023-12-26T02:46:09","date_gmt":"2023-12-26T02:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sasquatchnewsonline.com\/?p=22475"},"modified":"2023-12-26T02:46:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-26T02:46:09","slug":"hero-army-lieutenant-killed-in-wwii-will-finally-be-laid-to-rest-in-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sasquatchnewsonline.com\/?p=22475","title":{"rendered":"Hero Army Lieutenant Killed in WWII Will Finally Be Laid to Rest in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An American hero is finally coming home.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/News-Releases\/PressReleaseArticleView\/Article\/3596922\/tanker-accounted-for-from-wwii-walker-g\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency<\/a> announced that U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Gene F. Walker has officially been found and accounted for 79 years after his death in World War II.<\/p>\n\n<p>Walker, a native of Richmond, Indiana, was assigned to Company H, 3rd Battalion, 32nd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division and served as a commander of an M4 Sherman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/army-unleashes-new-assault-vehicle-firepower-giant-tanks-fraction-size\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tank<\/a> during World War II.<\/p>\n<p>In November 1944, Walker\u2019s unit fought German forces near H\u00fccheln, Germany. His tank was hit by an anti-tank round, which caused a fire and prompted surviving crew members to abandon the tank and flee.<\/p>\n<p>Walker was not among them. He was 27 years old.<\/p>\n<p>His fellow service members tried to recover his body from the burned tank, but they were unable to retrieve him due to \u201cheavy fighting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to locate deceased American military personnel upon the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-world-war-ii-era-boat-emerges-shrinking-lake-mead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">war\u2019s end<\/a> around H\u00fccheln, Germany, occurred in 1948. However, Walker\u2019s remains were unable to be found.<\/p>\n<p>But thanks to the efforts of a historian from DPAA, Walker\u2019s remains are unaccounted for no longer.<\/p>\n<p>The historian determined that a set of unidentified remains likely belonged to Walker, so the remains were exhumed from the Henri-Chapelle U.S. Military Cemetery in Hombourg, Belgium, and sent for testing and analysis in August 2021.<\/p>\n<p>After various methods of analysis and evidentiary examination, including mitochondrial DNA, the agency was confident in concluding that it was indeed 2nd Lt. Walker who they had identified.<\/p>\n<p>Although it has been 79 years, Walker will be received home by his family \u2014 his daughter, Anne Walker Collingwood, who was just three months old when he died.<\/p>\n<p>He and his daughter never met before his passing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the biggest surprise I\u2019ve ever had in my life. I still can\u2019t grasp it,\u201d Collingwood said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/25\/us\/world-war-ii-solider-identified.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Collingwood said her family plans to have a ceremony for her father early next year. He will be interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, California, a scenic vista which overlooks the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was extremely happy and wishing that my mother and my grandmother could be alive, so that they could know this,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>According to DPAA, another <a href=\"https:\/\/dpaa-mil.sites.crmforce.mil\/dpaaFamWebWWII\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">72,134<\/a>\u00a0U.S. military service members are unaccounted for from World War II.<\/p>\n<p>As a final act of recognition, a rosette will be placed next to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/gene-walker-remains-identified-indiana-soldier-killed-world-war-ii-1944\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walker\u2019s name<\/a> on the Walls of the Missing in Margarten, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/us-gives-full-support-approval-f-16-fighter-jets-ukraine-denmark-netherlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netherlands<\/a>.
