Sarraj, Hamas\u2019 handpicked Gaza City mayor. The decision to provide a worldwide platform prompted outrage for amplifying \u201cJew hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The op-ed \u2014 titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/12\/24\/opinion\/gaza-city-palestine-war.html?smtyp=cur&amp;smid=tw-nytopinion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cI Am Gaza City\u2019s Mayor. Our Lives and Culture Are in Rubble\u201d \u2014<\/a> condemns Israel for \u201ccaus[ing] the deaths of more than 20,000 people\u201d and for destroying or damaging \u201cabout half the buildings\u201d in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>Gaza City\u2019s mayor, Yahya R. Sarraj, describes the loss of its cultural institutions and its infrastructure.
