Most non-Catholics don\u2019t have any idea about what the \u2018Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith\u2019 is \u2013 and this name also doesn\u2019t ring a bell with many members of the Church.<\/p>\n

But call it by its original name, and nearly everyone will know it: the Holy Inquisition.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the oldest among the departments of the Roman Curia, founded to defend the Catholic Church from heresy \u2013 and is the body responsible for \u2018promulgating and defending Catholic doctrine\u2019.<\/p>\n

Its seat is the Palace of the Holy Office in Rome.<\/p>\n

In 1965, it became called as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith<\/em> before receiving its present name \u2013 but it\u2019s still informally known as the \u2018Holy Office\u2019.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a very prestigious office, former Pope Benedict XVI \u2013 then called Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger \u2013 headed it with great success during John Paul II\u2019s papacy.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the Pope\u2019s \u2018Doctrinal Watchdog\u2019 responsible for \u2018guaranteeing that Vatican documents and Catholic theological publications meet minimum standards of orthodoxy\u2019.<\/p>\n

Pope Francis, being the pontiff hell-bent in \u2018reforming\u2019 (many say destroying) Catholic Doctrine, chose the \u2018perfect\u2019 man for the \u2018task\u2019.<\/p>\n

Back in July, I published here in TGP an article called Pope Francis Places Controversial Argentinean Bishop as New Head of Discipline and Doctrine \u2013 Monsignor Fern\u00e1ndez Wrote Book About the \u2018Art of Kissing\u2019, and Is Accused of Covering up Sexual Abuse Allegations in His Archdiocese<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Below is an excerpt of it, to remind us:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGlobalist Pope Francis continues unabated in his struggle to remake the church according to his\u00a0very peculiar<\/em>\u00a0view. Now the Argentinean pontiff has selected a controversial countrymen for one of the most powerful posts in the Ecclesiastic Hierarchy, in a move that generated protest in sectors both inside and outside the Church.<\/p>\n

Associated Press<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reported:<\/p>\n

\u201cPope Francis on Saturday chose\u00a0a bishop\u00a0who is a trusted theological advisor from his native Argentina for one of the Vatican\u2019s most powerful positions \u2014 head of the watchdog office that ensures\u00a0doctrinal orthodoxy.<\/em><\/p>\n

Francis named Monsignor Victor Manuel Fern\u00e1ndez, the archbishop of La Plata, Argentina, as the prefect, or chief, of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dicastery, or department, enforces orthodoxy of church teaching and disciplines theologians deemed to have strayed from\u00a0Catholic doctrine\u00a0in their lectures or publications. But it has taken on considerably more importance to rank-and-file faithful as the stain of\u00a0pedophile priests\u00a0spread across the globe in recent decades. Among the department\u2019s duties are evaluating and processing sex abuse allegations against clergy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

ABC News<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reported:<\/p>\n

\u201cA U.S.-based group that tracks how the Catholic hierarchy deals with allegations of sexual abuse by clergy says Pope Francis made a \u2018troubling\u2019 choice in appointing an Argentine prelate to a powerful Vatican office that handles such cases.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

In 2019, Fern\u00e1ndez \u2018refused to believe\u2019 victims who accused a priest in the La Plata archdiocese of sexually abusing boys, and disregarded the accusations.<\/p>\n

That is disturbing, for a bishop set to have the responsibility of judging and punishing priests who\u00a0abuse children.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrancis \u2018made a baffling and troubling choice\u2019, the group said in statement emailed late Saturday in the U.S., citing how Fern\u00e1ndez handled the case.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018In his response to allegations, he stoutly supported the accused priest and refused to believe the victims\u2019, BishopAccountability.org said. Fern\u00e1ndez \u2018should have been investigated, not promoted to one of the highest posts in the global church\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And the criticism also comes from inside the church, as many conservative catholic have reservations about his theological work and his adherence to the orthodoxy he is to defend.<\/p>\n

Catholic news site\u00a0The Pillar<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0reported:<\/p>\n

\u201cFern\u00e1ndez is the author of more than 300 theological works, including the 1995\u00a0\u2018Heal me with your mouth. The art of kissing\u2019,\u00a0which was not included on the\u00a0list\u00a0of his publications released July 1 by the Vatican.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Holy See press office said that the archbishop\u2019s writings were marked by \u2018a significant biblical basis and a constant effort to create a dialogue between theology and culture, evangelizing mission, spirituality, and social issues\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That a book like that is inappropriate for a man in his position is half-admitted by Fern\u00e1ndez himself in the first paragraph of his book:\u00a0\u201cI want to clarify that this book was not written so much based on my own experience, but based on the lives of people who kiss. In these pages I want to synthesize the popular feeling, what people feel when they think of a kiss, what mortals experience when they kiss.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

So, knowing the man, it\u2019s easy to understand why Fiducia Suplicans<\/em> is such a massive flop. After all, who wants the author of \u2018The Art of Kissing\u2019 to be reforming millenary doctrine?<\/p>\n

Christopher R. Altieri wrote in The Catholic World Report<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cFiducia supplicans\u00a0is crowded with caveats and brimming with qualifications, many very carefully drawn, over 5,000 words. It is evident that the declaration\u2019s author and his commissioning principal both knew it would make waves. But it is unlikely either Fernandez or Pope Francis expected the tsunami of reaction that came in short order.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some dioceses in liberal-decadent western Europe made a show of enthusiastically embracing the business.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom other jurisdictions\u2014many of them geographically located in the global south\u2014the reception ranged from frigid to actively hostile, with several national bishops\u2019 conferences flatly refusing to implement the declaration at all.<\/em><\/p>\n

The cardinal-president of the Symposium of Episcopal Conference of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), Fridolin Ambongo, issued a call mid-week for talks among African bishops with a view to preparing a unified \u201ccontinental\u201d response.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ambongo, it bears saying, is a member of Pope Francis\u2019s C9 \u201csmall council\u201d of cardinal advisors.<\/p>\n

Fern\u00e1ndez told\u00a0The Pillar<\/em>\u00a0that \u00a0there is no change in the doctrine on marriage \u2014 male-female, exclusive, indissoluble, naturally open to the generation of new life.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nice to have the DDF prefect on record saying there isn\u2019t any change in said points of doctrine, but the fact he had to say it itself makes it difficult to credit the idea that there is much clarity in either\u00a0Fiducia\u2019s particular propositions or the theological articulation it gives for them. Now, the practical realities facing both the DDF prefect and his principal are indeed daunting.<\/em><\/p>\n

[\u2026] Pope Francis has put himself in an impossible situation. Popes do that, from time to time. It usually isn\u2019t that big a deal. In the age of instant communications and 24-hour news cycles, however, a big enough crisis could put the implosion of a pontificate on display for the entire world, in real time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
