The University of Minnesota has reportedly walked back plans to hire academic Raz Segal as the new head of the university\u2019s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS).<\/p>\n

Although they have not publically announced the decision, the university received public blowback after two members of the center\u2019s advisory board resigned,\u00a0citing, in part, Segals\u2019s stance after the October 7 Hamas terrorist attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an article in Jewish Currents<\/em><\/a> on Oct. 13, just days after October 7, Segal called Israel\u2019s military operation against Hamas \u201ca textbook case of genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

Segal wrote, \u201cThe assault on Gaza can also be understood in other terms: as a textbook case of genocide unfolding in front of our eyes. I say this as a scholar of genocide, who has spent many years writing about Israeli mass violence against Palestinians.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a piece in NJ Spotlight News<\/em><\/a> Segal suggested that complaints from Jewish students regarding campus safety amid unauthorized anti-Israel protests were \u201cbaseless\u201d and that anti-Jewish student protesters \u201caren\u2019t escalating anything\u201d but are subject to \u201ca vicious police attack against them.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a>, Segal argued that the creation of the Jewish state \u201creproduced the racism and white supremacy that had targeted Jews for exclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to The Jewish Insider,<\/a> a \u00a0spokesperson for the University of Minnesota told the outlet that the director selection process was put on hold \u201cto allow an opportunity to determine next steps.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMembers of the university community have come forward to express their interest in providing perspective on the hiring of the position of Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cBecause of the community-facing and leadership role the director holds, it is important that these voices are heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to an internal email obtained by the Washington Free Beacon (WFB), on Friday, Minnesota\u2019s interim College of Liberal Arts dean, Ann Waltner, extended an offer to Segal to serve as the center\u2019s chair.<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost immediately, French professor Bruno Chaouat and music professor Karen Painter announced their resignation from the center\u2019s advisory board.<\/span><\/p>\n

WFB shared both Chaouat <\/a>and Painter\u2019s<\/a> resignation letters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chaouat wrote in part, \u201cProfessor Segal, by justifying Hamas\u2019s atrocities five days after they occurred (via a perverse allegation that Israel was committing a genocide), cannot fulfill the mission of the Center.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has failed to recognize the genocidal intent of Hamas. He does not understand that a movement like Hamas is inherently fascist and represents precisely what CHGS stands against.\u201d<\/p>\n

Painter wrote that Segal \u201chas positioned himself on an extreme end of the political ideological spectrum with his publications on Israel and Gaza.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
