Authorities in the Hawaiian capital of Honolulu have urged beachgoers to take their valuables into the ocean rather than risk them being stolen by criminals.<\/p>\n

In a message posted in the run-up to King Kamehameha I Day, a public holiday in the state of Hawaii, the Honolulu police department said people should instead invest in a \u201cwaterproof bag\u201d in which they can keep their valuables safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor those enjoying the beach, don\u2019t leave valuables unattended on the sand,\u201d the message read. \u201cInstead, use a waterproof bag that you can take into the water with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Social media users were understandably perplexed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow about arresting, prosecuting and locking up criminals?\u201d one user wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

According to Hawaii News Now<\/a>, the warning comes amid a surger in crime across the island:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a real problem. It\u2019s been getting worse. There\u2019s more and more every week, especially with summer out of school,\u201d said one beach boy.<\/p>\n

At a Waikiki Neighborhood Board meeting in April, HPD reported more than 160 thefts in the area that month. Some say they see why police are urging caution.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can never be too safe. If you have to take an extra precaution, it\u2019s too easy to do so,\u201d said a beachgoer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s over the top. If you\u2019re out for the day and taking all your cash and phones, you do have to be careful,\u201d said another.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
To the surprise of nobody, Hawaii is run almost exclusively by Democrats. The state currently has a Democratic governor, two Democratic Senators and Democratic super majorities across both houses of the Hawaii State Legislature.<\/div>\n
