Canadian-born writer Jennifer Szalai\u2019s recent article for The New York Times calls the U.S. Constitution a \u2018threat to American Democracy\u2019 that is \u2018beyond redemption.\u2019<\/p>\n

Szalai\u2019s piece, <\/span>\u2018The Constitution Is Sacred. Is It Also Dangerous?\u2019<\/a> suggests that the document may be one of the biggest threats to America\u2019s politics, <\/span>describing it as \u201ca document that is essentially antidemocratic and, in this day and age, increasingly dysfunctional.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She criticizes the Electoral College and laments the Constitution\u2019s protection of minority rights as a \u201ctyranny of the minority\u201d and a \u201cdisempowerment of majorities\u201d and blames the founding document for being responsible for President Trump\u2019s election in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

Szalai writes, \u201cAmericans have long assumed that the Constitution could save us; a growing chorus now wonders whether we need to be saved from it. The document that\u2019s supposed to be a bulwark against authoritarianism can end up fostering the widespread cynicism that helps authoritarianism grow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump owes his political ascent to the Constitution, making him a beneficiary of a document that is essentially antidemocratic and, in this day and age, increasingly dysfunctional.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter all, Trump became president in 2016 after losing the popular vote but winning the Electoral College (Article II). He appointed three justices to the Supreme Court (Article III), two of whom were confirmed by senators representing just 44 percent of the population (Article I). Those three justices helped overturn Roe v. Wade, a reversal with which most Americans disagreed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Further, she calls an originalist interpretation of the Constitution \u201cConstitution worship.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is deeply troubling that anyone, particularly with the platform of the New York Times, would even hint that the Constitution, the foundation of our freedom and democracy, could pose a \u201cthreat.\u201d<\/p>\n

The suggestion isn\u2019t just alarming; it\u2019s a direct affront to the principles this nation was built upon and an attack on the pillar that has protected American liberty for more than two hundred years.<\/p>\n
