US Attorney General Merrick Garland said he is open to prosecuting Trump for his \u2018role in January 6.\u2019<\/p>\n

Merrick Garland was asked by NBC\u2019s Lester Holt if indicting a former president would \u201ctear the country apart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, we pursue justice without fear or favor,\u201d Merrick Garland told NBC\u2019s Lester Holt in an interview that will air Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

Right.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding January 6, for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another, accountable,\u201d Garland added. \u201cThat\u2019s what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo if Donald Trump were to become a candidate for president again, that would not change your schedule or how you move forward or don\u2019t move forward?\u201d Holt asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll say again that we will hold accountable anyone who is criminally responsible for attempting to interfere with the transfer \u2014 legitimate, lawful transfer of power from one administration to the next,\u201d Garland said.<\/p>\n

Merrick Garland recently made similar remarks to reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo person is above the law in this country. There is nothing in the principles of prosecution\u2026 which prevent us from investigating anyone who is criminally responsible for an attempt to undo a democratic election,\u201d Merrick Garland said last week when asked if Trump can be prosecuted. <\/p>\n
