META\u2019s Mark Zuckerberg, and the royally entitled Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Not that anyone has really asked them, but the British Royal Family\u2019s prodigal son and his American actress wife have decided that they \u2018needed\u2019 to weigh in on the important changes implemented by Mark Zuckerberg in his Meta company and the social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.<\/p>\n

And, boy \u2013 was it a love declaration to censorship!<\/p>\n

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle posted on their website that they were \u2018deeply concerned\u2019 by Meta ending its third-party fact-checking and loosening content moderation, as well as switching to \u2018an X-style Community Notes system where users flag content as false or misleading\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Telegraph<\/a> reported:<\/p>\n

\u201cNow, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have waded into the row with a 638-word statement saying the changes to Meta policies \u2018directly undermines free speech\u2019. [They wrote:] \u2018Allowing more abuse and normalizing hate speech serves to silence speech and expression, not foster it\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

In a statement on Sussex.com called \u2018fact-checking Meta\u2019, they added: \u2018In an already confusing and, in many instances, intentionally disruptive information environment, Meta has shown their words and commitments have very little meaning or integrity\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Harry and Meghan also think that Meta\u2019s decision serves to \u2018prioritize those using the platforms to spread hate, lies and division at the expense of everyone else\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018Politics of one country should never determine whether freedom of expression and civil and human rights are protected in the online spaces so clearly shaping or destroying democracy.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

They wrote that Meta was \u2018fully aware of their power to shape public discourse\u2019, but it is now \u2018disregarding any responsibility to ensure that power is not abused and instead allowing either ego or profit, likely both, to guide decisions that affect billions\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn particular, they said they were \u2018alarmed by plans to abandon commitments to diversity and equity, coupled with internal policy changes that undermine protections for marginalized communities\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

The couple called on Meta to \u2018reconsider and reinstate policies to protect all users\u2019 and urged \u2018leaders across industries to uphold their commitments to integrity and public safety in online spaces, and we applaud leaders who refuse to kowtow to bullying\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
