The U.S. House of Representatives just voted 266\u2013148 to repeal Washington, D.C.\u2019s Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022<\/a>, which allowed non\u2011U.S. citizens, including potentially illegal immigrants and foreign agents, to cast ballots in local elections.<\/p>\n

Led by Rep. August Pfluger (R\u2011TX), the vote drew support from 56 Democrats, proving GOP fears that D.C.\u2019s progressive experiment threatens the sanctity of American elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to go back to your district as a Democrat and say, yeah, I want foreign agents to be able to vote in our elections \u2013 \u2018Oh yeah, it\u2019s not federal elections,\u2019 some may say. But it has an impact on the way the city is run,\u201d Pfluger told Fox News.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis could be Russian embassy personnel, they could be\u00a0Chinese embassy personnel \u2013 a number of folks. It\u2019s just wrong. It goes against the fabric of our society,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The bill\u2014H.R.\u202f884\u2014not only strips this expanded voting bedrock but also delivers a crippling blow to the District\u2019s autonomy by reversing reforms aimed at limiting police union powers.<\/p>\n

In a 235\u2013178 side vote, lawmakers restored collective bargaining rights for the D.C. Police Union\u2014an unmistakable signal that law enforcement trumps local sovereignty.<\/p>\n

One of D.C.\u2019s own reps, Eleanor Holmes Norton (D\u2011DC), slammed<\/a> the action as \u201cpaternalistic, undemocratic incursions,\u201d condemning the vote as a calculated stunt to score headlines rather than a serious legislative priority.<\/p>\n

This marks the third such House effort to kill non\u2011citizen voting. Previous attempts fizzled in the Democrat\u2011led Senate\u2014but now, with GOP control in the upper chamber, the repeal bill faces a realistic chance of becoming law.<\/p>\n
