Now, it arises that Elon Musk\u2019s Tesla is suing one of its former engineers \u2018for allegedly stealing trade secrets\u2019 related to its Optimus humanoid robot.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe defendant is Zhongjie \u2018Jay\u2019 Li, who cofounded the humanoid robot startup Proception Inc. after working at Tesla from Aug. 2022 to Sept. 2024, according to the complaint filed in San Francisco federal court on Wednesday.<\/em><\/p>\n

The lawsuit alleges Li, who worked on \u2018advanced robotic hand sensors\u2014and was entrusted with some of the most sensitive technical data in the program\u2019, downloaded Optimus files onto two smartphones.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Li started his company \u2018Proception\u2019 less than a week after leaving Tesla. He claimed to have built humanoid robot hands equal to Optimus just five months later.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Rather than build through legitimate innovation, trial, and technical rigor, Defendants took a shortcut: theft\u2019, the lawsuit says. \u2018They misappropriated Tesla\u2019s most sensitive materials, sidestepped the laborious process of development, and launched a company based not on original discovery, but on stolen work\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Tesla has sued former engineer Zhongjie \u201cJay\u201d Li, alleging he stole confidential Optimus-related information to start a rival firm, Proception Inc.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Although Tesla does not disclose the precise year-over-year investments in Optimus, the research and development costs are in the billions of dollars\u2019, the lawsuit says. \u2018Such an ambitious project demands unparalleled expertise and substantial time and financial commitment to achieve even incremental progress\u2019.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
