The Department of Veterans Affairs proposed a rule on Monday that would reverse a Biden-era provision that had allowed the agency to conduct abortions.<\/p>\n

The newly proposed rule<\/a>, which was published in the federal register, said that the VA would seek to restore \u201cthe full exclusion on abortions and abortion counseling from the medical benefits package.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden<\/a> administration had removed the exclusion.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore that time, this exclusion had been firmly in place since the medical benefits package was first established in 1999,\u201d the federal register continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take this action to ensure that VA provides only needed medical services to our nation\u2019s heroes and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n

As noted<\/a> by the Christian Post, the Biden administration had permitted the VA to conduct abortion<\/a> and abortion-related services starting in September 2022, shortly after Roe v. Wade was overturned.<\/p>\n

The proposed rule from the Trump<\/a> administration nevertheless said that the \u201cinterim final rule was not only inappropriate as a matter of fact but also was legally questionable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only time Congress has specifically addressed VA\u2019s authority to provide abortions was in 1992 in section 106 of the Veterans Health Care Act of 1992,\u201d the proposal added.<\/p>\n

\u201cVA\u2019s legal authority to \u2018un-do\u2019 the changes made in September 2022 is beyond doubt,\u201d it continued.<\/p>\n

The reversal on the Biden-era rules is not intended to limit access to true reproductive healthcare.<\/p>\n

The proposal made clear that the \u201cVA has never understood this policy to prohibit providing care to pregnant women in life-threatening circumstances,\u201d including ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages, which had been \u201ccovered under the VA\u2019s medical benefits package\u201d before the 2022 rule change.<\/p>\n

The rule would say that \u201cthe exclusion for abortion does not apply \u2018when a physician certifies that the life of the mother would be endangered if the fetus were carried to term.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration\u2019s move to make sure the VA is not performing abortions was celebrated by Republicans on the House Veterans Affairs Committee.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was wrong that the Biden administration violated settled law in 2022 and began offering abortion services through VA,\u201d a statement<\/a> from the lawmakers said.<\/p>\n

The statement called the Biden rule \u201ca disastrous policy that was created for political purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe pushed back hard on this disastrous policy over the last two years to hold the Biden-Harris administration accountable and protect the lives of the unborn<\/a>,\u201d it continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s simple \u2014 taxpayers do not want their hard-earned money spent on paying for abortions \u2014 and VA\u2019s sole focus should always be providing service-connected health care and benefits to the veterans they serve,\u201d they added. \u201cHouse Republicans, alongside President Trump, will always stand up for the sanctity of life \u2014 today\u2019s decision by Secretary Collins makes that message perfectly clear.\u201d<\/p>\n
