The state of Florida is looking to expand its immigration crackdown and build another \u201cAlligator Alcatraz\u201d detention facility, as deportations continue to mount.<\/p>\n

A second detention center known as the \u201cNorth Detention Facility\u201d is being planned for Camp Blanding, a Florida National Guard training site in Clay County, in the northeastern part of the state, the Tallahassee Democrat reported.<\/a><\/p>\n

The site once served as a prisoner-of-war cam<\/a>p during World War II.<\/p>\n

The Florida Department of Emergency Management is reportedly purchasing weather monitoring equipment and two lightning sirens for the facility for almost $40,000, according to a state contract.<\/p>\n

CBS News reported<\/a> last week that deportations from \u201cAlligator Alcatraz<\/a>\u201d have already begun, and quoted GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis as saying that \u201chundreds\u201d of detainees have been processed for removal.<\/p>\n

He also said that if a second detention facility project isn\u2019t proven to increase immigration officials\u2019 progress, he wouldn\u2019t move forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it\u2019s not leading to real significant cadence in removals, then I\u2019m going to wait,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cNow, I have confidence that it will, and I think it will eventually, and once that happens, then we\u2019ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Camp Blanding\u2019s historical website,<\/a> \u201cBecause of Camp Blanding\u2019s size, isolation and moderate climate, it served as a German Prisoner of War camp from September 1942 to April 1946. More than 4,000 men \u2013 soldiers, U-Boat sailors, and civilian \u2018enemy aliens\u2019 \u2014 were detained at Camp Blanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, the site serves as a training<\/a> ground for the state National Guard and U.S. armed forces.<\/p>\n

The Tallahassee Democrat added that multiple \u201cbrick-and-mortar locations\u201d in northeast and south central Florida have been identified as potential detention center sites.<\/p>\n

DeSantis should continue ramping up his campaign against illegal immigration every chance he gets. The federal government can only do so much. Without partial cooperation from cities and states, the likelihood of seeing federal law enforced decreases dramatically.<\/p>\n

His actions won\u2019t come without backlash, however, as Democrats have been extremely vocal about such measures.<\/p>\n

Florida\u2019s Executive Director for the Division of Emergency Management called out Democrats<\/a> last month for misrepresenting the conditions at \u201cAlligator Alcatraz,\u201d and for trying to score political points.<\/p>\n

Kevin Guthrie appeared on Fox News\u2019 \u201cJesse Watters Primetime,\u201d saying that while he was giving a tour to dozens of lawmakers, some of them were theatrical and manufactured issues out of thin air.<\/p>\n

It was an experience Guthrie described as being \u201cvery taxing.\u201d There have also been lawsuits filed in an attempt to halt Florida\u2019s immigration agenda.<\/p>\n

The Department of Justice signaled<\/a> last month that it\u2019s willing to oppose these efforts at every turn.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Department of Justice has defended President Trump\u2019s immigration agenda in court since day one and we are proud to protect \u2018Alligator Alcatraz\u2019 from baseless, politically motivated legal schemes,\u201d Attorney General Pamela Bondi said.<\/p>\n

If Florida can continue showing tangible results by highlighting the positive aspects of enforcing immigration laws, more states are sure to jump on board \u2014 ultimately helping President Donald Trump follow through on his top campaign promise, dating all the way back to 2015.<\/p>\n
