The Cuellar political machine in South Texas is collapsing under the weight of its own corruption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Congressman Henry Cuellar<\/span><\/a> was indicted in May 2024 for accepting over <\/span>$600,000<\/span><\/a> in bribes from a Mexican bank and Azerbaijan\u2019s state-owned oil company.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the problem extends far beyond the congressman.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to reporting from <\/span>NOTUS<\/span><\/a> and statements from local officials, <\/span>Henry Cuellar\u2019s<\/span><\/a> siblings\u2014Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar and former municipal judge Rosie Cuellar\u2014benefited from improper appointments, financial favoritism, and misuse of government staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Neither has been charged.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

In 2023, the FBI raided the Webb County Sheriff\u2019s Office. <\/span>Sheriff Cuellar<\/span><\/a> told the press he was not the subject of the investigation. However, multiple officials <\/span>confirmed<\/span><\/a> that sheriff\u2019s office employees were ordered to perform political work for the Cuellar family during official business hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That included campaign fundraising, voter outreach, and logistical support for Cuellar\u2019s re-election efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Public records <\/span>show<\/span><\/a> staff were reassigned from law enforcement roles to campaign duties, including organizing events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some employees were <\/span>instructed<\/span><\/a> to attend campaign functions while still on the county payroll. The sheriff ignored requests for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n

The corruption extended to <\/span>Rosie Cuellar<\/span><\/a>, who in 2022 was appointed to a municipal judgeship in a border town that has no active courthouse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She <\/span>never<\/span><\/a> heard a case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The salary she received for the position has not been disclosed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

NOTUS<\/span><\/a> confirmed that the court has no records, no court calendar, and no physical office. Her appointment existed only on paper\u2014and resulted in compensation funded by taxpayers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cuellars represent the worst of what one-party rule produces in South Texas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Henry Cuellar has held elected office since 1987.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His wife, Imelda Cuellar, received over $100,000 from \u201cconsulting\u201d contracts linked to the same foreign entities that are now central to the federal indictment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cuellar\u2019s campaign committee took in <\/span>$110,000<\/span><\/a> from ActBlue during a cycle in which the platform was flagged for more than <\/span>1,900<\/span><\/a> suspicious donations, many of which <\/span>originated<\/span><\/a> from foreign IP addresses.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cuellars are <\/span>not<\/span><\/a> the only ones; they are part of a political structure that rewards loyalty with taxpayer money.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The sheriff\u2019s office is used as a campaign arm. Judgeships are handed out to family members who never show up. Legal shields protect elections, and challengers are blocked before they can get on the ballot.<\/span><\/p>\n

The only <\/span>meaningful<\/span><\/a> response has come from Republicans. Texas Attorney General <\/span>Ken Paxton<\/span><\/a> has brought over 150 election fraud cases since 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But under current law, Paxton <\/span>cannot<\/span><\/a> prosecute election crimes without approval from a local district attorney. In Webb County, the DA has refused to authorize any action related to the Cuellar family.<\/span><\/p>\n

Until that legal barrier is removed, families like the Cuellars will continue to operate without consequences\u2014winning elections, collecting salaries, and evading scrutiny in full view of the public.<\/span><\/p>\n
