Smerconish made the bizarre argument during a segment on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cBack in the day, in high school, it was a function of \u2018where are we going?\u2019 not whether we\u2019re going out,\u201d the host began.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve gotta tell you one thing, I\u2019ll say it quickly, don\u2019t worry,\u201d Smerconish continued. \u201cIt\u2019s like the sex headline. When you see the headline that says that \u2018fewer teens are having sex\u2019 and as a parent, you say, \u2018well, boy, that\u2019s good news!\u2019 And, similarly, fewer Americans are drinking. \u2018Well, that\u2019s good news.\u2019 No! They\u2019re bad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Smerconish explained that he thinks the decreases in underage sex and drinking is \u201cactually bad news because it\u2019s also representative of a decline in relationships and that\u2019s the biggest problem this country faces!\u201d<\/p>\n

\nTaken at face value, his line appears to valorize higher teen sexual activity and more drinking as indicators of healthier social bonds, which are formulations many Americans will find alarming. Public-health experts, parents, and child-safety advocates view the news of decreases on these fronts through a very different lens: lower teen sex and reduced alcohol consumption are usually framed as improvements in safety, education outcomes, and long-term well-being.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Smerconish has faced criticism in the past for his easy interviews with sexual predators and men accused of sexual misconduct, including Bill Cosby.<\/p>\n
