Loureiro, a nuclear science and engineering professor from Portugal, was 47 years old.<\/p>\n<p>A Brookline police spokesperson said officers responded to a call for gunshots at an apartment on Gibbs Street at about 8:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA victim was located who had been shot multiple times,\u201d Brookline police deputy superintendent Paul Campbell told WBZ-TV.<\/p>\n<p>Loureiro was taken by ambulance to a Boston hospital, where he died Tuesday morning. No other information about the shooting was immediately released and authorities did not say if they are looking for a suspect. Campbell said no one is in custody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an active and ongoing homicide investigation,\u201d Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey\u2019s office said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Loureiro was recently appointed director of MIT\u2019s Plasma Science and Fusion Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLoureiro is taking the helm of one of MIT\u2019s largest labs: more than 250 full-time researchers, staff members, and students work and study in seven buildings with 250,000 square feet of lab space,\u201d MIT <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2024\/nuno-loureiro-named-director-mit-plasma-science-fusion-center-0501\" target=\"_blank\">said <\/a>earlier this year. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA theoretical physicist and fusion scientist, Loureiro joined MIT as a faculty member in 2016, and was appointed deputy director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) in 2022.
