A 71-year-old grandmother in Crestline, California, did what decent people used to do without thinking twice. She sat on her porch. A young man walked by with a sob story. She opened her door.

Two weeks later she was in a hospital bed with a brain bleed, a shattered face, broken bones in her arm and hand, and eyes so swollen she could not see. The man she fed every night had worked her over with a metal baseball bat for hours while she slept. Then he robbed her and left her to bleed out.

And in Gavin Newsom’s California, that man is still free.

Her name is Therese Garcia.

According to her daughter, Abbie Garcia, Therese likes to sit on her porch in the San Bernardino Mountains community of Crestline and talk to neighbors. That is how she met 26-year-old Erik Eduardo Navarro of Orange County.

He told her someone had stolen all of his camping gear. He said he had a job interview at a nearby hardware store. He needed a place to stay, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Therese believed him. Family members describe her as the kind of woman who has always tried to help people down on their luck. She invited him in. She cooked him dinner every night. She thought he was a “sweet kid” who just needed a hand.

That is not how this ended.

After several days, Navarro started making demands and taking over her house, the family said. He stopped doing the chores he had promised. Therese told him it was time to go.

He did not go.

That night, Tuesday, August 25, she fell asleep on the couch. Navarro picked up a metal baseball bat.

“When she went to sleep that night, she just woke up to him beating her with a metal bat, and that went on for hours,” Abbie Garcia told NBC Los Angeles. “Every time she would wake up a little bit, he would come back and beat her again.”

The family’s GoFundMe account is even more blunt. She was in and out of consciousness. Every time she came to, he hit her again. He stopped only after she went completely still and he apparently decided she was dead. Then he stole her phone, credit cards, keys, and e-bike and ran.

Neighbors finally asked deputies for a welfare check. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at her home in the 23900 block of Straight Way around 6 a.m., according to The Sun.

They found a 71-year-old woman who had been beaten and kicked so badly she could barely see. The sheriff’s office said she had a cut forehead, a sliced eyebrow, swollen hands, and orbital swelling that left her unable to see clearly. Deputies said the attack started after she asked Navarro to leave.

That official description does not capture what doctors later catalogued. Abbie Garcia says her mother suffered a traumatic brain injury and a brain bleed, multiple deep lacerations that needed extensive stitches, broken bones throughout her face, severe injuries to both eyes, and multiple broken bones in her arm and hand.

She spent days vomiting blood. She has no health insurance. She may need facial surgery once the swelling goes down. Neighbors’ call is the only reason she did not bleed to death alone in her own living room.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department identified the suspect as Erik Eduardo Navarro, 26, of Orange County. They released his photograph. They asked the public for help. That was late August.

It is now September 8. Two weeks have passed. Navarro is still at large. Detectives were still hunting him as of the latest local television reports this past weekend.

The Alpine Mountaineer reported that Navarro allegedly threatened another woman in Crestline after the attack. He was also reportedly spotted at a local 7-Eleven, but disappeared before deputies arrived.

Navarro has additionally been identified as the prime suspect in the theft of a Picasso line drawing from Molly’s Art Gallery in Crestline, according to the local newspaper. Investigators reportedly found identifying evidence inside the gallery after the building was broken into.
