Colorado Democrat Governor Jared Polis signed a bill into law on Monday that legalizes the murder of babies in the womb until birth, citing that “a fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus does not have independent or derivative rights under the laws of the state.”
Governor Polis signed the Reproductive Health Equity Act (HB22-1279) as preparation for the possibility that the U.S. Supreme Court could overturn the Roe v. Wade precedent in the coming weeks, Colorado Sun reported.
“No matter what the Supreme Court does in the future, people in Colorado will be able to choose when and if they have children,” the pro-abortion Governor said during the bill signing.
“That includes assisted reproduction like IVF, and it includes the legal ability to terminate a pregnancy without having to worry about being jailed or without having to worry about their provider facing legal consequences,” Polis added.
“This bill codifies a person’s right to make reproductive health care decisions free from government interference,” said Polis.
“In the state of Colorado, the very serious decision to start a pregnancy or to end a pregnancy with medical assistance remains between a person, their doctor, and their faith,” Polis argued.
Polis then attacked the state of Texas, Arizona, and Kentucky for banning abortion, claiming it was a government overreach.
“And what we’re seeing in states like Texas and Arizona and Kentucky is an enormous government overreach, an enormous government infringement of the individual liberties that we hold sacred in this country.”
The new law prohibits state and local public entities from:
Denying, restricting, interfering with, or discriminating against an individual’s fundamental right to use or refuse contraception or to continue a pregnancy and give birth or to have an abortion in the regulation or provision of benefits, services, information, or facilities; and
Depriving, through prosecution, punishment, or other means, an individual of the individual’s right to act or refrain from acting during the individual’s own pregnancy based on the potential, actual, or perceived impact on the pregnancy, the pregnancy’s outcomes, or on the pregnant individual’s health.
Colorado is the 16th state together with Washington, D.C. to legalize killing babies before birth.
