Woke Democrat California gubernatorial candidate and former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra is facing scrutiny after defending taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens in a recent interview on CNN’s “The Story Is.” Pressed by host Elex Michaelson about why illegal aliens should remain on the state’s health-care rolls, Becerra replied that he looks at them as “hard workers” like his immigrant parents and declared, “If you’re working hard, I want you to have healthcare.”
He miserably argued that many of these workers are the people “picking the crops,” building homes and caring for elderly relatives, saying Californians benefit from their labor even if they lack legal status. Becerra also stupidly contended that excluding illegal aliens from coverage would not save money, warning that they would still seek treatment through costly emergency rooms if denied regular care.
Conservative outlets seized on the segment, exposing Becerra’s comments as an admission that illegal aliens are taking jobs that could otherwise go to American workers while receiving “free healthcare for illegals.” His Republican rival Steve Hilton has argued that providing public benefits to people who “broke the law” by entering the country illegally incentivizes bad behavior and has vowed to remove illegal aliens from taxpayer-funded health programs.
Video clips of the CNN exchange quickly spread on X and Instagram, where critical captions highlighted Becerra’s line about “the folks that are picking the crops” and accused him of valuing illegal alien farmworkers and caregivers over struggling California taxpayers. Some posts labeled Becerra “too big of a risk for California” and blasted him for wanting residents to “pay for healthcare for these illegal immigrant migrant workers” at a time of high living costs.
Other social media users and campaign videos echoed those attacks, claiming Becerra’s stance proves the Democrat “machine” prioritizes illegal aliens while ordinary Californians wait for appointments or lose coverage. Becerra, whose platform includes moving California toward universal single-payer care and preserving Medi-Cal access for people without legal status, has maintained that offering health coverage to all workers is both a moral obligation and a practical way to keep the state’s economy and health system stable.
